Privacy policy
Alt—Out has no accounts, no ads and no analytics of its own. We don’t collect anything about you ourselves.
This policy covers the Alt—Out app for iPhone and this website, altout.live. Both are run by Alt Out LLC (“we”, “us”). The sections below say what does leave your phone, who receives it, and why.
Your location
Alt—Out asks for your location only when you tap the locate button, and only while you’re using the app. It never asks for “Always” access. If you allow it, your phone uses your location to show where you are on the map, to show how far away a place is, and to sort places by distance.
Those calculations happen on your phone. Alt—Out’s own server never receives your location. The map is drawn by Mapbox, though, and Mapbox’s software does receive location data, as described next.
You can say no, or change your mind at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Alt—Out. The app works without it.
The map (Mapbox)
The map is provided by Mapbox, Inc. To draw it, the app downloads map images from Mapbox, so Mapbox receives your device’s IP address and the parts of the map you look at.
Mapbox’s software also sends Mapbox telemetry: de-identified location and usage data (such as where the map was used and how it performed), diagnostic data, and a random identifier. Mapbox declares this data as not linked to your identity and not used to track you across other companies’ apps. Mapbox uses it to run and improve its maps.
You can turn Mapbox telemetry off: tap the ⓘ button in the corner of the map and choose the telemetry option. Mapbox’s privacy policy is at mapbox.com/legal/privacy.
Venue information (our server)
The list of places comes from Alt—Out’s server, which runs on Cloudflare. The app asks it for the venue list and sends nothing else: no location, no identifier, no account. Like any web server, Cloudflare receives your device’s IP address and standard request details (such as the type of device and app version) in order to deliver the response, and may keep them briefly for security and to keep the service running. We don’t use them to identify you, and our server code doesn’t log them.
When you email us
Buttons in the app such as Suggest an edit, Do you run this venue?, Report a bug, Tell us, Rate and review and Donate open your own email app with a draft message to hello@altout.live. The draft is pre-filled with the venue’s name, address and our reference number for it. Nothing is sent unless you choose to send it.
If you do, we receive your email address and whatever you write. We use it to reply to you and to correct or improve the map. We may use what you tell us about a venue (for example, its door policy or accessibility) on the map, but never your name or email address. Our email is hosted by Google Workspace. We keep messages for as long as they’re useful for keeping the map accurate; ask us and we’ll delete yours.
Links to other sites
Venue pages link to places’ own websites and Instagram, and to Google Maps for directions. Those open outside Alt—Out, and what happens there is covered by those companies’ policies, not this one. We don’t add tracking to those links.
What we don’t do
- No accounts, sign-in or profiles.
- No advertising, and no advertising identifier.
- No analytics or crash-reporting services of our own.
- No tracking of which places you look at.
- No selling or sharing of personal information.
- No cookies or analytics on this website.
This website
altout.live is a plain website hosted on Cloudflare. It uses no cookies, no analytics and no third-party scripts or fonts. Cloudflare handles your IP address to serve the pages and protect the site, as any host does.
Children
Alt—Out lists bars, clubs and other adult venues. It isn’t meant for anyone under 17, and we don’t knowingly collect information from children.
Changes
If what the app collects changes, we’ll update this page and the date at the top before the change reaches the app.
